German cockroaches
An indoor suspect. Learn the identifying marks, food and moisture fixes, and bait options.
Last updated October 3, 2026

German cockroach control starts with removing food, water and hiding places, then using targeted treatments when needed. A large outdoor roach and a small indoor German cockroach may need different approaches.
Know the suspect
German cockroaches are light brown, about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long, with two dark lengthwise stripes on the shield behind the head. Adults have wings but rarely fly. Kitchens and bathrooms offer the food and moisture they seek. They can arrive in boxes, groceries or luggage, or move from another infested unit. Texas A&M identification and management guide

What they can do
Cockroaches can contaminate their surroundings and produce allergens associated with asthma, especially in children. Their presence deserves attention, but seeing a roach does not establish that someone has an illness. Texas A&M cockroach overview
Start with control, not a spray
- Clean crumbs and grease, including hidden areas around appliances.
- Keep food and food waste in closed containers.
- Repair leaks and reduce accessible water.
- Remove cardboard and clutter near activity.
- Inspect incoming boxes and use monitors to help locate hiding places.
Sanitation supports treatment; it is not a reason to blame a household for an infestation. In attached housing, neighboring units may also need attention. Texas A&M management guidance
Chemicals you may encounter
Cockroach bait products may contain active ingredients such as fipronil, abamectin or hydramethylnon. Boric acid is another ingredient used in some cockroach baits and dust products. These are examples, not a recommendation that every product is suitable for every home. Sacramento County cockroach guidance
Choose a product labeled for the actual pest and location. Follow its directions for placement, amounts, protective equipment and re-entry. Keep baits and dusts inaccessible to children and pets. Do not spray over bait placements; spraying can interfere with bait use. Do not use an outdoor-only pesticide indoors or assume more product works better. EPA pesticide safety
Seasonal watch
German cockroaches are primarily indoor pests because they do not tolerate cold well. Do not stop monitoring a heated kitchen just because winter has arrived. An exterior treatment alone does not address an indoor German cockroach problem. Texas A&M
When to get help
Repeated sightings, daytime activity or an infestation in multiple rooms warrants an assessment from a qualified pest professional. The plan should include finding the source, monitoring and follow-up, not simply adding more spray. This field guide is educational and does not offer treatment bookings.
Common treatments
Sanitation, monitoring and well-placed labeled cockroach baits are common parts of control. Some combination baits include growth regulators that affect immature stages; their performance is not a claim for each ingredient used alone. Keep baits and dusts inaccessible to children and pets, and do not spray over bait placements. Persistent activity needs a licensed professional assessment.
Ingredient references
These are examples discussed in pest guidance, not a shopping list. The exact product label must cover the pest, location and use. An ingredient name alone does not establish suitability or Texas registration.

Common questions
How do I recognize a German cockroach?
German cockroaches are light brown, about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long, with two dark lengthwise stripes on the shield behind the head. Compare the actual insect with an Extension identification guide; the wanted portraits on this site are illustrations.
Should I spray over cockroach bait?
No. Spraying over bait placements can interfere with bait use. Follow the product label for placement, amounts and re-entry.
Do German cockroaches go away in winter?
No. They are primarily indoor pests, so keep monitoring a heated kitchen through winter. An exterior treatment alone does not address an indoor German cockroach problem.
